Lip coloring,
explained.

Lip coloring permanent makeup work at Syinger Tattoos

Faded lip colour, a shape you'd like to even out, or just waking up with a natural tint on. Permanent lip coloring adds colour that stays. Here's what the treatment involves.

Lip coloring, sometimes called lip blushing, is a permanent makeup treatment that implants a natural pigment into the lips, giving them more colour, a cleaner edge, or a fuller-looking shape.

The pigment is chosen to sit just above your natural colour, so the result should look like your lips, only better: like you've always had a subtle tint, not a dramatic lipstick shade slapped on top.

01 — What lip coloring actually is.

The technician uses a small machine to deposit pigment into the top layer of the lips, much like the technique used for microblading brows. The colour is layered in gradually so the artist can control the depth and intensity.

Because lips are soft and the skin there is thin, lip coloring is considered one of the more technical permanent makeup services. It's not something to rush. A good result comes from careful colour selection and an even, patient hand.

A useful way to think about it: lip coloring is closer to staining than painting. The goal is a soft, buildable tint, not an opaque layer of colour. That's why the result looks natural rather than done.

02 — Who it's for (and who should wait).

People book lip coloring for a few different reasons:

  • Their natural lip colour is pale or uneven and they want a consistent tint
  • They want a better-defined lip line without drawing one on every day
  • They'd like the illusion of slightly fuller lips
  • They're tired of reapplying lipstick and want a low-maintenance base

There are also situations where it's better to hold off. Cold sores or active infections around the mouth, pregnancy, and some skin conditions can all mean postponing the treatment. It's always worth discussing this with the artist before booking. Honesty here protects the result.

03 — The procedure, step by step.

A lip coloring appointment usually looks like this:

Consultation. The artist looks at your natural lip shape and colour, discusses the shade you want, and talks through whether the shape should be enhanced at all. You agree on a colour and placement before anything starts.

Preparation. The lips are cleansed and a topical numbing cream is applied so the pigmenting is as comfortable as possible.

The first pass. Pigment is applied across the lips. This is a base layer; the artist doesn't try to get it perfect in one go, because going too dark too fast is the most common mistake.

Adjusting the shape and depth. After the first pass, the artist reviews the coverage and builds on it, tightening the lip line and deepening the colour where needed.

The whole session typically runs around an hour to an hour and a half.

04 — What healing looks like.

Right after the session, the lips will look darker and slightly swollen. That's the pigment plus the trauma of the work, and it's normal. Over the next few days the intensity settles down as the surface layer peels away.

Keep the lips moisturized, avoid picking any peeling skin, and steer clear of spicy or acidic food for the first few days. Most people are fully healed within a week, and the colour softens to roughly 40–60% of what it looked like on day one.

That's why many people schedule a touch-up a month or two later. The touch-up is where the artist adds depth and corrects any areas that healed lighter. The final result comes together there.

“The best lip color looks like it could be yours. You want someone to notice your lips, not your lipstick.”

05 — Booking a consultation.

You don't need to know your exact shade before you message the studio. Tell us what you're hoping for: a subtle tint, a clearer edge, a fuller look. Mention any reactions or concerns you've had. From there we can confirm whether lip coloring is right for you and what it will involve.

Send a photo of your lips as they are now, a reference or two of the look you like, and any questions you have. The more the artist has to work with, the more useful the consultation will be.
